It’s just a bunch of people embracing their extremely limited range of cultural knowledge and expecting to be congratulated for it. The thing is, while Arcade Fire may not be as mainstream as other nominees, they certainly are mainstream. Everything in music culture is so niche now that those more famous nominees would get the same “who, what?” from people at a different end of the pop culture spectrum. Sometimes, if you read Pitchfork or Stereogum or AV Club or Paste or even Rolling Stone or NME, it feels like you can’t get away from an act, and that they’re everywhere and huge. But then, if you are like Rosie and aren’t on the pulse anymore, you get caught off-guard by bands that don’t get played on pop radio. MTV used to ensure that everyone knew about Beck or Radiohead even if they didn’t actually listen to them. Now, you can be a semi-unknown band that sells out amphitheaters that fill to the gills with 15,000 fans. Know how I know this? I’ve been to a sold-out Arcade Fire show at Merriweather Post Pavilion before. And it may as well have been a U2 show. Who are the Arcade Fire? The most unknown chart-topping success ever. Rebloggin for that amazing comment above because it pretty much says anything humanely possible ok Now can we all please move on? I’m tired of my friends that know who the Arcade Fire are making fun of people that don’t. I’m usually oblivious to the Grammy Awards and all you people are messing up my record.
