That’s Madan Padarat, talking not about the actual Ganges River in India, but Jamaica Bay, in Brooklyn and Queens. Local Hindus have been performing religious rituals along the Queens shores, under the takeoff path of planes from Kennedy Airport. These rituals involve the throwing of objects like coconuts and jewelery into the water, and sometimes includes animal sacrifices—and it’s polluting the sand and the (already polluted) water. Local religious leaders and park rangers are working to find a solution, organizing an Earth Day cleanup. But what the article doesn’t mention is the importance of gold in a lot of these Hindu sacrifices. Which means there are gold coins and gold jewelery just waiting to be found at the bottom of Jamaica Bay, for the daring.
